Football Targeting Calls

 After yesterdays game, Slippery Rock Vs Cal University of Pennsylvania, I want to talk about a popular targeting call that is becoming more commonly called in College and the NFL. Targeting is when the defensive player leads with the crown of the helmet and makes brutal contact with the offensive player, or when the defensive player makes contact above the neck at the head area. During the game, the official made a terrible call on Slippery rock's, Selvin Haynes where Selvin was going for the ball and incidentally hit the receiver in the head. A penalty was called and Selvin missed the rest of the first half and when the play was reviewed at halftime he was allowed to rejoin in the second half. This call is changing the way defensive players attack the ball, tackle, and rushes the QB which really gives the offense an advantage. Also most times a targeting call is called, the defensive player will miss the rest of the game and all of next game. My question would be is this too much off a penalty? Football is a violent sport and players are held accountable even if it is a bad call. There has to be a way the officials need to be held accountable for making bad calls. Also, better ways to term what a "defenseless player" is because the defender is not paying attention to what the offensive player is doing when they catch or run the ball, they're just trying to make the play. I feel like these calls really effect a defensive player which isn't fair in my opinion because offensive players don't have rules like that.
